چکیده

Numerous studies have shown that packet reordering is common, especially in networks where there is high degree of parallelism and different link speeds. Reordering of packets decrease the TCP performance of a network, mainly because it leads to overestimation of the congestion in the network. In this paper, we analyze the performance of networks when reordering of packets occur. We propose a proactive solution that could significantly improve the performance of the network when reordering of packets occurs. We report results of our simulation experiments, which support this claim. Our solution is based on enabling the senders to distinguished between dropped packets and reordered packets.

Robust TCP (TCP-R) with Explicit Packet Drop Notification (EPDN) for Satellite Networks

Numerous studies have shown that packet reordering is common, especially in satellite networks where there are regular handoffs occurring between neighboring satellites. Reordering of packets decreases the TCP performance of a network, mainly because it leads to overestimation of the congestion of the network. We consider satellite networks and analyze the performance of such networks when reor...

TCP Maintenance and Minor Extensions ( TCPM )

This document specifies an algorithm for the detection and quantification of packet reordering for TCP. In the absence of explicit congestion notification from the network, TCP uses only packet loss as an indication of congestion. One of the signals TCP uses to determine loss is the arrival of three duplicate acknowledgments. However, this heuristic is not always correct, notably in the case wh...

Internet - Draft TCP - aNCR November 2014

This document specifies an adaptive Non-Congestion Robustness (aNCR) mechanism for TCP. In the absence of explicit congestion notification from the network, TCP uses only packet loss as an indication of congestion. One of the signals TCP uses to determine loss is the arrival of three duplicate acknowledgments. However, this heuristic is not always correct, notably in the case when paths reorder...

Protocol level solutions for the packet reordering problem

The Internet is experiencing an exponential growth in users and network traffic. As the Internet grows larger and larger, the performance of the network is subjected to severe performance degrading issues such as congestion in the network, link failures, corruption of packets and reordering of packets. In this thesis, we examine the problem of packet reordering in networks and how reordering of...
